In the beginning, Nia didn’t speak much. The director at The Center at Red Oak (Manhattan) told us some seniors experience depression, some have experienced abuse and many felt invisible to the world. When we launched a senior citizen theater group, Nia was encouraged to join. For the final show, our group performed original skits about NYC. Nia ran across the stage, arms spread wide. The packed audience cheered her on. Nia was the wind. Her performance was an adaptation of sorts of a poem she read in our sessions. The poem was about the strength of women. The blue fabric flowing behind her was a costume she took pride in making. She made it with a group that she now considered her community. Looking on as Nia beamed, another group member uttered,
"You need something to get you out of bed."
